China has a rich history of traditional wellness practices, from food and herbal medicine to meditation, movement, and energy practices. One of the most accessible and gentle practices is Qigong, an ancient Chinese exercise that combines movement, breathing, and mindfulness to support overall health and well-being.
If you are looking for a different kind of wellness activity in Koh Tao, Qigong is a wonderful way to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and enjoy a mindful movement practice surrounded by nature.

What Is Qigong?
Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that brings together gentle movement, breathing exercises, and focused awareness. It is traditionally practiced to cultivate and balance qi, often translated as life energy or vital energy.
The word Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) comes from two Chinese concepts:
Qi meaning life energy, vital force, or breath
Gong meaning skill, cultivation, or practice developed through consistent effort
Together, Qigong can be understood as the practice of cultivating life energy through mindful movement, breathing, and awareness.
What Does Qigong Exercise Look Like?
A Qigong class usually combines three main elements: movement, breath, and mind. Together, they create a calm, mindful practice.
Movement
Qigong movements are generally gentle, smooth, and flowing. You may move slowly between different standing postures, stretch the body, rotate the joints, or use repetitive movements to encourage relaxation and body awareness. The movements are not about pushing your body to its limits. Instead, the focus is on moving with control, balance, and awareness.
Breath
Breathing is an important part of Qigong. Slow, deep, and controlled breathing is coordinated with the body's movements. Much like Pranayama Yoga, mindful breathing can help you become more aware of your breath and create a sense of calm and relaxation during your practice.
Mind
Qigong also incorporates mindfulness and focused attention. You may be encouraged to concentrate on your breathing, body sensations, movements, or the flow of energy through the body. This combination of movement, breath, and awareness makes Qigong more than simply physical exercise. It encourages you to slow down and become more present.

Benefits of Practising Qigong
Regular Qigong practice may support both physical and mental well-being. Depending on your practice and individual needs, you may experience benefits such as:
Improved body awareness and balance
Greater flexibility and gentle mobility
Relaxation and stress relief
Improved breathing awareness
A calmer and more focused mind
A greater sense of connection between body and mind
